Negotiating online and by phone

This training is for leaders and employees who want to represent their interests confidently even when they can't sit down at the same table as the other party. From using your voice to handling difficult situations, we practice the techniques of meetings held on screen and over the phone.

What is the program about?

One- or two-day group training, in person or online; also available with Thod learning support.

A phone or online negotiation is not a weaker version of a face-to-face meeting; it is a different genre. Voice and word choice come to the fore, body language doesn't disappear but means something different, and preparation, structuring the conversation and handling difficult moments all call for different tools. If you simply carry your face-to-face routines over to the screen, the screen will punish you.

What you take away: confident business conversations by phone and online, with an understanding of the advantages and specifics of online negotiation; practice in active listening and in structuring and steering a conversation; deliberate use of voice and body language, and practice in resolving difficult situations.

Who is the program for?

For leaders and employees who want to represent their interests confidently even when they can't sit down at the same table as the other party. It is especially timely when the team holds more and more negotiations or meetings by phone or online, and this calls for different preparation.

When is it worth starting?

  • voice and body language need to be used more deliberately where personal presence is limited
  • questioning technique or active listening needs developing in remote discussions.

How we work

The training starts with technical, environmental and personal conditions, because online these are also factors in a negotiation. We then practice opening lines, key messages and handling difficult moments, and the practical use of online tools is also part of the program.

The program starts from the fact that more and more people negotiate online or by phone, because it allows them to work more efficiently and makes cooperation possible between participants in different locations. Negotiating by phone or online is different from negotiating face to face, however: verbal expression and the use of voice come to the fore, while body language doesn't disappear entirely either. The training looks for answers to how all this affects participants, how best to prepare, what makes a phone or virtual meeting successful, and which challenges are worth watching out for during negotiations.
