What is the program about?

9 in-person training days in 5 modules, with DISC-based self-awareness and Thod learning support between the modules.

A newly appointed leader may have strong professional results, but leadership takes something more: self-awareness, clear communication, feedback they can both give and receive, and time management that works under pressure too. The foundation level of the Integrated Leadership Program lays this groundwork, with three to four groups a year since 2014.

The outcome of the program: a deliberate leadership presence grounded in self-awareness, and knowledge of your own leadership style; a practical communication and feedback toolkit; more deliberate time management and more confident public speaking; a situational leadership toolkit: which style and what kind of delegation works when.

Built on Thod DISC

Who is the program for?

For newly appointed, less experienced young leaders, and for leaders who have been in a leadership position for a few years but want to develop the skills it requires and work more deliberately. It is especially timely if the appointment is recent and the leadership approach needs to be grounded now.

When is it worth starting?

  • you still have little leadership experience and need a practical toolkit for everyday situations
  • you have been working as a leader for a while, and your goal is to shape your own style and your leadership effectiveness more deliberately
  • you would like to exchange experiences about the challenges of leadership with leaders from other companies and industries, in an open group.

How we work

The Integrated Leadership Program accompanies participants from laying the foundations of a leadership mindset to developing their individual leadership style. The varied learning experience comes from the diversity of methods of the four senior trainers: each of them works as an expert in their own field of leadership development, with a different approach.

Program background

This leadership training program combines GROW's more than 30 years of leadership development practice, international leadership trends and the diverse experience of our senior trainers. Many companies continuously send new participants to the running programs, and the program also runs as an in-house program at several companies, in a tailored, modular format.

Blended process

The training sessions are embedded in a blended process, supported by Thod, GROW's own gamified learning support system. Between the in-person sessions, participants receive individual, small-group and large-group assignments to deepen what they have learned, support self-reflection and try things out in everyday work. The assignments are not mandatory but strongly recommended, and each takes 1–2 hours.

The modules

Module 1: Leadership self-awareness, “Why?”

Leading others means being in constant relationship with them. The aim of the self-awareness block is to help participants become aware of the individual patterns and needs behind their leadership role, which permeate and shape their everyday relationships and practice. Those who connect with their own feelings and strengths consolidate the foundation of how they lead. To support connecting with ourselves and our environment, we draw on the DISC behavioral typology.

Main topics of the module:

  • self-awareness as the foundation of deliberate leadership
  • authenticity, being a genuine leader
  • using behavioral typologies in leadership
  • the characteristics of the different behavioral types and recognizing them in everyday life
  • identifying our colleagues' types and our own
  • consciously managing strengths and trap behaviors
  • communication and cooperation between different behavioral types
  • developing communication strategies for individual leadership situations.

Module 2: Effective leadership communication and giving feedback

According to Mintzberg's classic study, more than 70 percent of managerial work consists of talking with others, which is why effective communication is crucial: the ability to prevent or manage conflicts through our messages. The aim of the module is for participants to get to know the assertive communication style, master practical methods of conflict management and learn to give feedback on employee performance, whether it is positive feedback or the often more uncomfortable situation of giving developmental feedback on weaker performance.

Main topics of the module:

  • assertive, passive and aggressive behavior, and recognizing these styles
  • the problem quadrant
  • turning a “you-message” around: the four-step assertive “I-message”
  • empathy and active listening
  • communication roadblocks
  • rules of debate and informed exchange of views, tools for avoiding manipulation traps
  • acceptable ways of saying no
  • giving feedback.

Module 3, day 1: Personal effectiveness for leaders

One of the most common problems today is overload and a lack of deliberate time management, which at leadership level can have a major impact on the lives of direct reports and on the organization's performance, so a leader's responsibility here is multiplied. To escape the daily gauntlet, catch up with ourselves and close each working day in good order and successfully, we need deliberate time management. The day helps leaders discover what they could do differently so that they feel that, although time really does fly, they are the pilots of their own lives.

Main topics of the day:

  • the philosophy of personal effectiveness
  • personal goals for the future
  • prioritizing for everyday survival and for reaching long-term goals
  • saying no to build and maintain working relationships
  • the role and importance of planning
  • identifying and cutting back time wasters
  • using systems that support time management.

Module 3, day 2: Confident presence and public speaking

What affects the credibility of what we say in a business negotiation or at a leadership annual review? How can we get the best out of our voice? Which tools are worth using, and what is best avoided? The day goes through the key questions of successful public communication and answers them. On this practice-focused day, participants grow in confidence and become able to give a presentation with a self-assured presence after proper preparation.

Main topics of the day:

  • confident presence, posture
  • use of voice and language
  • principles of communication
  • connecting effectively with the audience, using your own toolkit
  • influencing, emotion-based communication and asserting your interests while presenting
  • several rounds of presentation practice with video recording, group analysis and feedback.

Module 4: Leading in a changing environment (leadership as a profession: leadership roles, leadership styles)

The leadership role demands not only tasks but continuous self-reflection and adaptation. In this module, we focus on how leadership style and tools can be adapted to changing situations, to employees' changing needs and to business goals. Motivation, goal setting and delegation are key to leading a team successfully; with the help of the Pygmalion effect and motivation theories, we also explore how to achieve the best results while supporting the team's development.

Main topics of the module:

  • what a leader does, leadership self-image
  • the situational leadership model
  • leadership styles, getting to know your own leadership style
  • leadership exercises
  • self-assessment, knowledge transfer
  • the Pygmalion effect
  • motivation, motivation theories
  • goal setting
  • delegation.
