Problem Solving and Decision Making

This training is for leaders and employees who want to recognize the typical traps that distort their thinking.

How it works Group · in person or online · Thod support available

What is the program about?

A 1- or 2-day group training, in person or online; also available with Thod support.

We make hundreds of decisions every day, most of them without thinking, and often we make the important ones with the same reflex as the trivial ones. Our thinking is steered by heuristics and biases that serve us well most of the time but lead us astray when it comes to important decisions. If you know your own decision-making style and the typical traps, you choose more consciously.

What you take away: a more conscious choice of decision-making style; insight into the typical traps and misconceptions of decision making; concrete methods and techniques to improve the quality of problem solving and decision making.

Problem Solving and Decision Making

Who is the program for?

For leaders and employees who want to recognize the typical traps that distort their thinking. It is especially timely when employees want to become more conscious of their own decision-making style.

When is it worth starting?

  • the typical errors, biases and misconceptions of decision making need to be recognized
  • concrete methods are needed for problem solving and decision making.

How we work

The training starts with your own decision-making style, and only then come the tools: the decision matrix, the fishbone diagram, the Six Thinking Hats, individual and group decision making. We also look at where creativity has its place in a decision, and where constraints do.

Once participants understand their own decision-making processes, we connect this knowledge to practical examples of problem solving.

Using the Six Thinking Hats and other structured methods, we practice making more conscious choices in both individual and shared situations.

Program topics

  • decision-making styles: your own style and its consequences
  • heuristics and biases in everyday decisions
  • avoiding decision errors, the factors of a good decision
  • decision tools: decision matrix, fishbone diagram
  • the Six Thinking Hats: six perspectives on decision making
  • individual and group decision making
  • creativity and constraints in decision making.

Delivery

We weight the topics to fit the client organization's situation. On request, we accompany the program with the Thod learning support system, which keeps participants applying what they have learned between training days.

It is also worth starting if:

  • both individual and group decision making need to be developed.
