Train-the-Trainer Program

What is the program about?

15 in-person training days over 8 months, in groups of no more than 12: an intensive, practice-oriented train-the-trainer program embedded in a personal development process.

You become a trainer by experiencing first-hand what it is like to stand in front of a group, and by getting useful feedback on it. GROW's Train-the-Trainer Program has been built on this since 2008: four of the 15 training days are devoted entirely to participants presenting their own training blocks, and over the eight months everyone spends nearly 50 hours in the trainer's role, receiving coaching-style feedback from the trainers.

What you take away from the program: your own trainer philosophy and perspective; the ability to design and deliver tailored training independently; a broad methodological toolkit, in-house training materials and the Trainer's Methodology Handbook; membership in the Alumni community, with regular, free knowledge-sharing events.

Who is the program for?

For aspiring trainers starting without prior qualifications and practicing trainers who want to expand their toolkit, for HR professionals who want to understand training as a development format in more depth, and for professionals who want to take their existing work further as trainers.

When is it worth starting?

  • If you want to start a career as a trainer without prior qualifications
  • If you want to take your professional work further by becoming a trainer
  • If you already work as a trainer and want to expand your knowledge and toolkit
  • If, as an HR professional, you want to get to know training as a development format in more depth
  • If you want to become a trainer at a recognized institution, gaining substantial hands-on experience

How we work

Since 1994, GROW has followed one core principle: we don't deliver off-the-shelf training. Every program is tailored to the client's needs, and we never work with a fixed, inflexible agenda. We prepare our future trainers for the same attitude and set of competencies, because you only become a fully fledged trainer when you can adapt your programs flexibly to the group in front of you, even on the fly.

Why GROW's Train-the-Trainer Program?

  • Few train-the-trainer programs on the market have run continuously for this long: our first open Train-the-Trainer Program started in 2008, and since then 45 groups have completed it, with more than 520 trainers taking part. In recent years we have launched an average of three groups a year.
  • Each of the six senior trainers is well past their thousandth training day, and most have more than 20 years of experience in training, organizational development and coaching. Pintér Zoltán has been part of the program since the very first group, and the others have also long been stable members of the team. Participants therefore not only meet a wealth of experience but also see different trainer styles, which is an important learning point as they shape their own way of working as trainers.
  • The training sessions are embedded in a blended process: between the in-person sessions, Thod, GROW's own gamified learning support system, sets individual, small-group and large-group tasks that deepen what has been learned, support self-reflection and encourage trying things out in everyday life.
  • Unlike many other train-the-trainer programs, we stick to a maximum of 12 participants, so that everyone has an ideal learning environment and enough time to practice.
  • We are committed to in-person training: even during the pandemic we did not move a single train-the-trainer program online; instead, we paused and resumed after a break of a month or two.
  • On every training day, participants learn new trainer tools and methods through their own experience.

Key topics of the program

  • Trainer mindset and training methodology: the methodology of experiential learning and how it works; creating a training environment that supports learning; learning styles and patterns, and what they mean for designing a training program and for the trainer's preparation; trainer roles and skills; the characteristics of the group as a learning environment, and how a training group differs from a traditional school class; trainer tools, exercises and games.
  • Designing training programs, understanding client needs, fine-tuning training processes.
  • Presentation skills and tools.
  • Nonviolent, assertive communication and authenticity as a trainer: the cornerstones of leading a group on an equal footing.
  • Handling difficult situations and defense mechanisms.
  • Group dynamics: skills, sensitivity, awareness and tools.
  • Personal experience as a trainer: practicing experiential learning through experiential learning.
  • Creativity as a trainer: how a trainer can be creative, and how the creativity of the process brings out participants' intrinsic motivation.
  • Self-awareness as a trainer: who I am as a trainer, and my path as a trainer.
  • Delivering virtual training: experiential training on online platforms.

Between the classroom sessions, individual assignments and thematic work in groups of four also support your development. Graduates therefore gain not just the fundamentals but a broad set of competencies and the confidence to become versatile, effective trainers.

Why eight months?

Just as you can't learn to drive from theory lessons alone, the methodology of experiential learning can only be mastered through experiential learning and a great deal of practice. Being a trainer is not simply a matter of methodological knowledge and knowing a set of games; becoming a trainer is a much broader process that involves your whole personality. That is why 15 training days and many additional assignments ensure that, by the end of the process, participants are fully prepared trainers.

An organizational development approach

Today, success in the training market comes to those who can also tune in to clients' needs and company culture as organizational developers; GROW, too, owes it to this approach that it has kept growing despite the market downturns of recent years. During the program, participants gain insight into the organizational development mindset and learn, among other things, the details of the project that won GROW the Best Organizational Development Project of the Year award.

How does the program achieve all this?

  • Participants get to know a wide range of training exercises and theoretical models through first-hand experience.
  • They acquire the trainer's way of thinking needed to design a training program.
  • They design training blocks and complete training programs, and so learn the characteristics of different types of training.
  • The process produces ready-made training programs that serve as useful material in your work as a trainer.

Before you apply

Before applying, everyone interested has a personal conversation with the program's professional lead, Pintér Zoltán. This is neither an entrance exam nor a test: it is a chance to learn about the program's detailed professional background and GROW's approach to training trainers, while we get to know you and your motivations. Our aim is to spend the eight months with participants whom GROW's Train-the-Trainer Program can best support in reaching their goals, and who are committed and share a trainer mindset similar to ours. After the conversation, every applicant can decide based on fuller information and a personal impression.

Participants receive a certificate on completing the program.
