Within and Beyond Our Schemas

This three-day program is for helping professionals who want to recognize and resolve patterns fixed in childhood that distort how people function as adults. We provide diagnostic and practical tools so that the real cause of a client's stuck point can be uncovered and changed for good.

What is the program about?

3 in-person training days in a group format, with coaching tools grounded in schema therapy.

Needs left unmet in childhood create invisible patterns, or schemas, that continue to drive our thinking, feelings and reactions in adulthood. Because they are familiar, they feel safe, and again and again they draw us into situations that activate the same schemas. In a coaching process, this is often what lies behind a stuck point that looks like a goal-setting or motivation issue on the surface.

What you take away: a clear view of your own patterns and deeper self-awareness; a diagnostic tool for client work to uncover the cause behind a stuck point; practical techniques for initiating lasting change; worksheets, exercises and question sets for use in client situations.

Who is the program for?

For coaches, trainers and helping professionals who want to expand their methodology with schema work; it is also a good fit for graduates of the foundation or advanced level of GROW's Integrative Coach Training. It is also for leaders and HR professionals who want to understand complex patterns of human behavior, and for anyone progressing consciously on their own self-awareness journey.

When is it worth starting?

  • you need a diagnostic tool to get to the deeper cause of clients' stuck points
  • recognizing and rewriting your own limiting patterns is also a goal
  • as a leader or HR professional, you need a better understanding of the drivers behind behavior.

How we work

What happens here is both self-awareness work and professional development: recognizing and rewriting your own patterns gives you the method, which you can then apply safely with clients. Schema coaching has therapeutic roots, but it works within the safe boundaries of coaching competencies: it makes the pattern visible, separates the emotional program from present-day reality, and builds a new way of functioning.

The training is based on personal experience; training days run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Schemas and schema chemistry

Schemas are automatic, unconscious programs that we wrote and used as children to protect ourselves, but many of them later become dysfunctional and limiting. They give us a sense of familiarity, which is why we attract situations that activate the same schemas, and people who complement our schemas: this is schema chemistry. These experiences can distort our perception of reality, damage our connections and set off self-defeating spirals. Working with schemas in coaching brings deeper awareness, makes it possible to rewrite patterns, and anchors and rehearses healthier reactions within a safe coaching framework; the result is freedom, authenticity and emotional flexibility.

Methods and tools

Over the three days, we look at ourselves and our schemas through the following tools, so that as development professionals we can apply them confidently in our client work too:

  • schema-focused psychoeducation
  • schema identification questionnaire, schema map
  • experimenting with breaking schemas using cognitive, experiential and behavioral techniques
  • inner child dialogues, role-plays
  • strengthening the Healthy Adult mode
  • behavioral experiments: practicing new reactions, flashcards.

Training days run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Participants receive a certificate on completing the training.
