What is the program about?

2-day group training, in person or online; also available with Thod support.

In January 1915, Ernest Shackleton's ship, the Endurance, became trapped in the Antarctic ice, and a few months later it was crushed. For two years, the 28-man crew was at the mercy of the ice, the cold and one another, and every one of them made it home. Not because of luck, but because of the way Shackleton led: how he gave people roles, motivated them, handled conflict and kept the team going when nothing was in their favor.

What you take away: growing leadership awareness and the ability to identify roles within the team; better handling of failure and difficulty, with a toolkit for motivation and assertive communication; more confident, deliberate conduct in conflict situations.

Story-Based Leadership

Who is the program for?

For senior leaders who want to sustain their team's perseverance, even in extreme situations. It is especially timely when leaders and their teams need to hold their ground in difficult, challenging situations.

When is it worth starting?

  • the team's commitment and perseverance need to be sustained even in extreme conditions
  • leaders want to develop their emotional intelligence and use the tools of motivation and assertive communication more consciously.

How we work

The story isn't an illustration but the framework of the training: participants try out what they would do as leaders in the expedition's real decision points, then look at what Shackleton did. This brings emotionally intelligent leadership, leadership style, conflict management and motivation into play all at once.

Within the emotionally engaging framework of the story, participants practice several leadership skills at once through experiential learning: emotionally intelligent leadership, leadership styles, teamwork, change management, collaboration development, communication, conflict management and motivation. The goal is for them to have something to draw on in their own team's difficult moments too.

Through the real events of Shackleton's Antarctic expedition, we work through the tools of emotionally intelligent leadership.

Program topics

  • the emotionally intelligent leader
  • leadership styles
  • teamwork
  • leadership toolkit: change management, collaboration development, communication, conflict management, motivation.

Delivery

We adjust the weighting of topics to the client organization's situation. On request, we support the program with the Thod learning support system, which keeps participants applying what they've learned between training days.

It is also worth starting if:

  • roles within the team need to be identified and teamwork strengthened
  • leaders need to act more confidently in conflict situations.
