Action Learning
Licensed / external methodologyA group development process in which participants work on their own real issues throughout.
- The group brings in individual topics and works on them together
- Alongside the methodology, it also provides a strong self-awareness experience
- Coaches and professionals who work with groups learn to facilitate it
Action Learning, developed by Reg Revans, is learning through action: a small-group coaching method in which group members take turns bringing their own individual topic, while the others use questions and their collective knowledge to help the topic owner reach a solution and a concrete action plan. What distinguishes it from team coaching is that it works not with an intact team but with a heterogeneous group: members may work in different parts of the same organization or independently of one another, and topics can be both business-related and personal. It is a well-structured format with a rich toolkit, yet it becomes a unique process every time. Members learn together and from each other: they work on real problems, reflect on their own experiences, and also function as a knowledge-sharing platform in a controlled environment. GROW's Action Learning – Group Coach Training is an ICF-accredited program.

What is the program about?
3 in-person training days in groups of no more than 8, using the Action Learning methodology.
Action Learning is a small-group coaching method that works differently from team coaching. There, we work on the shared goal of a team that belongs together; here, group members take turns bringing their own individual topic, and the others use questions and their collective knowledge to help the topic owner reach a solution and a concrete action plan. Whoever receives in one round gives in the next, so everyone learns from their own situation and from the others' at the same time.
What you take away from the program: the mindset and toolkit of an Action Learning team coach: creating safety for the group and the process, setting the structure and goals; more confident handling of shifting group dynamics; first-hand experience in all three roles: as team coach, topic owner and group member.

Who is the program for?
For new and practicing coaches who trained in GROW's Integrative Coach Training (foundation or advanced level) or at another institute, and for development professionals who work with groups: trainers, facilitators and team coaches. The method is also very useful for leaders and HR professionals. It is especially timely if, as a coach, you need to grow in facilitating group processes.
When is it worth starting?
- If, as a coach, you want to grow in facilitating group processes
- If you work with groups (as a trainer, facilitator or team coach) and want to expand your toolkit
- If, as a leader, you want to support your team's problem-solving more effectively
- If, as an HR professional, you would use the method to develop internal teams
How we work
Participants work on their own real topics throughout and try out all three roles: they lead the process as team coach, bring a topic as topic owner and coach as group members. So alongside the methodology, the program also brings a strong self-awareness experience, within a safe, guided framework.
About the method
Action Learning is a well-structured format with a rich foundation of tools and methods, yet every time it becomes a spontaneous, intuitive and unique process. The group mobilizes its own strength, knowledge and experience to help the person who brings the topic achieve their goals, and it works just as well for personal situations as for solving complex professional or business issues.
Group members may work independently on different parts of the same organization or project, in completely different professional fields, or on individual, personal topics with a self-awareness focus. At each meeting, group members take turns in the topic owner role, and, moderated by the team coach, the others do everything they can to help the topic owner find a solution to their situation and leave the process with an action plan. Members learn together and from one another: they work on real problems, reflect on their own experiences and, drawing on their collective knowledge, also function as a knowledge-sharing platform. Action Learning is learning through action, in a controlled environment.
